20th Annual CFC’s WIC Celebration of Parenthood

An enthusiastic crowd estimated at 250 – 300 people gathered recently in Taunton’s Liberty & Union Park for the fun and valuable information of the 20th Celebration of Parenthood offered by the CFC Taunton/Attleboro WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Program. The festivities included children’s activities, music, and a demonstration of healthy cooking. Health care resource information tables were also provided by Morton Hospital and Sturdy Memorial Hospital.

The WIC Program, also called the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program, is a federal program created to provide food to low-income pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women, infants and children until the age of five years old. The WIC Program has proven to be effective in preventing and improving health problems related to nutrition through a combination of nutrition education, breastfeeding promotion and support, supplemental foods, and health care referrals.

Awards were also an important part of the Celebration of Parenthood activities. State Representative Shaunna O’Connell and Alison Robles, aide to State Representative Patricia Haddad presented Olympic-style medals to children for performances in the children’s games. WIC Breastfeeding awards were given to Jillian Donnelly, Chelsey Guay, and Colleen Sullivan. Mary Delano accepted the Corporate Sponsor Award presented to Saint-Gobain, a multinational corporation with a facility in Taunton. The Small Business Award was presented to Mike Almeida of Future Graphics, a business located in Taunton.

CFC’s Operation Christmas Benefits From the 16th Annual Paul Morais Picnic

Paul Morais was an enthusiastic and dedicated volunteer for many years in the Citizens for Citizens, Inc. (CFC) Taunton Operation Christmas Program. Mr. Morais’ life was taken in a tragic accident sixteen years ago, but his family and friends continue to honor his memory and volunteer efforts by staging an Annual Paul Morais Picnic Day in Taunton to raise funds for the CFC Operation Christmas Program to use for distribution of gifts to needy children, along with donations to other charitable organizations in Paul’s memory.
This year’s Paul Morais Picnic was held on August 14 at the Portuguese American Civic Club (PACC) in Taunton.

There are almost twenty volunteer Picnic Team Members who did the preparation work for this event, which involves preparing the field, setting up tents and seating, along with cooking and distributing the delicious BBQ food. Adults were charged a ticket fee of $20 (which goes towards charitable donations) for all the hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and other side items that they and their children could eat. In addition to the barbequed burgers, hot dogs, and meat on a stick cooked over an open fire pit, there were raffles, prizes, and games for the kids.

A great time was had by all those who attended the picnic and the money that was donated will be utilized by CFC Operation Christmas (averaging $3000 per year from previous picnics) to purchase toys for the children of less fortunate families in the Taunton area.

Citizens for Citizens, Inc. is very appreciative of the continued strong support for Operation Christmas that is provided each year by the Annual Paul Morais Picnic Day.
