Girls Inc. of Taunton has honored Debbie Araujo, Manager of the Citizens for Citizens, Inc. (CFC) Taunton office, with its sixth annual Woman of Achievement Award.

The 2012 Woman of Achievement Award was presented to Debbie Araujo at a dinner celebration on April 4, 2012 held at the Stone Forge Restaurant in Raynham. Ms. Araujo has worked for CFC, a designated Community Action Agency, for 32 years, starting with a temporary Head Start Program position and eventually becoming manager of the CFC Taunton office.

Well known in the Greater Taunton area for her liaison work with social and human service agencies, Debbie is most recognized for her leadership in the development and growth of the CFC Taunton Operation Christmas Program. In its first year, the Operation Christmas Program distributed gifts to 200 needy children, working with a budget of $500. The program now provides holiday gifts to more than 3,000 children in low-income families, newborn to age twelve. As supervisor of the Operation Christmas program, Debbie Araujo is involved with raising private cash donations and toy donations from local companies, civic groups, and individuals. She also must coordinate the over 70 volunteers who package and distribute the toys and clothing items to Taunton area families who might not otherwise be able to have gifts for their children on Christmas Day.

Taunton Mayor Thomas Hoye, Jr.; State Senator Marc Pacheco, and State Representative Shaunna O’Connell were in attendance to honor Debbie Araujo at the dinner reception. Mayor Hoye presented Ms. Araujo with a citation and State Senator Pacheco issued a resolution as both honored her for a long and successful career in social services, and for having a significant and positive impact on her local community. Elizabeth Berube, Assistant Director of Citizens for Citizens, Inc., praised the inspiring work ethic and dedication to CFC clients that Debbie Araujo brings to work each and every day. Robert Barboza of Barboza Auto recalled his involvement with Operation Christmas and joked about how hard Debbie made him and the other volunteers work during the day of the Christmas toy distribution. Gil Enos, Budget Director for the City of Taunton, spoke of his longtime friendship with Debbie Araujo and told of his own participation in the Operation Christmas Program. Other speakers at this event included Jessica Johnstone of Girls Inc., and Eva Gaffney.

After receiving her awards and listening to the gracious recognition from speakers at her testimonial celebration, Debbie Araujo thanked everyone for their attendance at the dinner and all those volunteers who made Operation Christmas possible each year. She further noted that, “I could not possibly do this program without the overwhelming support CFC receives from the generous people in this community.” Debbie Araujo has been a lifelong resident of Taunton. She is married to Al Araujo and they have a daughter, two step-children, and seven grandchildren.

Girls Inc. of Taunton is celebrating 100 years of service to area girls through after school programs, summer camp activities, advocacy, and special events. This important organization sponsors programs with the potential to change the lives of girls, inspiring them to “be strong, smart and bold.” Girls Inc. utilizes research-based curricula to assist girls in academic achievement, enable them to lead healthy, physically active lives; assess media messages, develop interests in technology and science, and learn to manage finances. More than 300 girls annually are supported and empowered by the positive experiences provided by Girls Inc. of Taunton.

Thanks to the generosity of the BJ’s Charitable Foundation, the Citizens for Citizens, Inc. (CFC) Food Pantry will be able to purchase food supplies for distribution to local families that are experiencing difficulty in making ends meet during the lengthy economic recession.

On March 22, 2012, CFC received notification from BJ’s Wholesale Club, Inc. that their Board of Directors had approved a grant in the amount of $10,000 from the BJ’s Charitable Foundation to the CFC Food Pantry “to purchase additional food to meet the needs of clients of the Food Pantry Program.”

The BJ’s Charitable Foundation has been making grants since 1965 towards the goal of creating a positive, long-lasting impact of the communities being served by BJ’s Wholesale Club. The Foundation’s mission is “to enhance and enrich community programs that primarily benefit children and families.” The greater part of the BJ’s Charitable Foundation funding has gone to people in need, through contributions to shelter programs, food pantries, soup kitchens, and food banks.

Chrystal Arpa, CFC Food Pantry Coordinator, explained, “The Food Pantry has been receiving very little in donations since last year. The monies we are receiving from BJ’s will help us continue to feed the 1,000 individuals we currently service every month. It is because of the support of businesses such as BJ’s that we are able to continue to keep the Food Pantry open in these harsh economic times.”

The Citizens for Citizens, Inc. Food Pantry will be able to utilize the BJ’s funding to assist the day-to-day operation to obtain nutritious food for the growing number of clients seeking food assistance. People in the Greater Fall River area that would not otherwise be capable of acquiring sufficient food for their families will now continue to receive groceries from the CFC Food Pantry and be able to provide more healthy meals for family members.

Diana Martell, the Citizens for Citizens, Inc. (CFC) WIC Program Community Coordinator, organized a breakfast meeting on March 23, 2012 for state and local elected officials in the conference room of the CFC Taunton headquarters.

The WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Program is facing a severe, 9.3 percent cut in the proposed GOP federal budget. If this budget is adopted, funding statewide could be reduced by as much as $9 million, resulting in a drastic cutback of services to vulnerable children and their families. Due to current budget restrictions, the CFC WIC Program has already had to reduce staff employee hours, despite an increase in the number of program clients.

WIC Program Director Karen Swass emphasized to the gathering that the WIC Program is not a “welfare program.” Ms. Swass noted that WIC is a nutrition and health-based program, serving 45 percent of all Massachusetts infants, with a caseload estimated at 136,000. The WIC Program provides nutritional education, breastfeeding instruction, vouchers redeemable by qualifying parents or guardians for healthy food, and medical/dental care referrals. The WIC Program makes for healthier children and families, thus reducing overall health care system costs. There are strict rules for WIC qualification, based on economic need, with regular evaluations conducted of participant income levels. Karen Swass hoped that the information provided to the elected officials in attendance would encourage them to urge the federal government to avoid cuts to the valuable and necessary WIC Program.

Margaret Areias also spoke to the group regarding her experience with the WIC Program. Ms. Areias was laid off from her job six years ago and was pregnant at the time. Initially reluctant to apply for WIC benefits, she found that the extra financial help and nutrition instruction made it possible for her baby and family members to eat healthy meals.

In attendance at the WIC breakfast meeting were Sam Johnson, a regional representative from Senator Scott Brown’s office; a representative from Congressman James McGovern’s office, Taunton Mayor Thomas Hoye Jr., a representative from State Senator Marc Pacheco, along with State Representatives Shaunna O’Connell, Keiko Orrall, Steven Howitt, and George Ross.

The Citizens for Citizens, Inc. Food Pantry and the Salvation Army of Fall River were thankful recipients of $2,500 donations from the Fallon Community Health Plan for assistance with the growing demand for help from hunger relief programs in this economically stressed region.

Fallon Community Health Plan was founded in 1977 as a not-for-profit health care services organization. Starting in 2006, Fallon Community Health Plan has conducted an annual fundraising initiative to support hunger relief programs throughout Massachusetts. This year, over sixty companies contributed donations to the Fallon Community Health Plan hunger relief project, which resulted in net proceeds of more than $150,000 in grants being given to 77 regional food banks and food distribution agencies.

Kimberly Salmon and Michael O’Leary of Fallon Community Health Plan presented the $2,500 donation checks to Chrystal Arpa of the CFC Food Pantry and representing the Salvation Army Major Elizabeth Deming Fall River. Ms. Arpa stated that Citizens for Citizens, Inc. was very pleased to have received a generous donation for the third consecutive year and that the funds would be used to purchase additional healthy food from the Boston Food Bank for distribution to local needy families.

Chrystal Arpa, CFC Food Pantry Coordinator, was honored with an award this January by the Somerset Marine Corps League for her volunteer efforts on behalf of the Toys for Tots Program, and for the current and past donations to the Marine Corps League by Citizens for Citizens, Inc. (CFC). As a Toys for Tots volunteer, Chrystal has spent many hours helping the Marine Corps League to gather toy donations and pass them on to parents of needy children in the Greater Fall River area.

The Toys for Tots Program was founded in 1947 and is run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve. The program collects new toys during the autumn of each year and then distributes the toys locally to less fortunate families as Christmas gifts for youngsters who might not otherwise receive presents during the holiday season.

In 2011, the Somerset Toys for Tots Program generously donated over 2000 toys to the CFC Operation Christmas Program. Citizens for Citizens, Inc. has reciprocated by presenting the Somerset Marine Corps League this past year with more than ten boxes of various toiletries, office supplies, and health care products that will be sent to troops serving in Afghanistan. Since both programs are dedicated to serving the local low-income community, working together assures that families in need will receive the best possible assistance during difficult times.

There were so many donations, that a flat bed and dolly had to be used to deliver the gifts!”
